Hi all, here is my last work in gimp for painters, a lusitan horse. One of the most intelligents horses arround the world. It was made in GImp for painters + gimp paint studio pack. a very classic style work, not too much layers and a lot of brush and smudge work ,like in oils. It was painted to my portfolio reload and be printed in DinA4 and DinA3 size. therefore i will not post a too much large image, but also in the low res you will see the very hair detailed work in him. if some one want too see details letme now. crits and comments are welcome. i need to improve my animals skills.
I really enjoy the colours of this, those muted earth tones work very well for the subject, together with the background this does indeed have an oil-painting feel.
The horse itself feels distinctly feminine to me, I don't know if it is the braids or the long lashes (which I'm sure also make horses have), but that's my impression. She also looks a bit sad actually. The best bit is the part just above the nose where the veins show; the colouration and structure of this section is very good.
For some reason I'm more sceptical about the hair. Whereas it's clear thatthe strands and brainds are done with great precision and technique, the hairs in general, while beautiful in their own right, feels less realistic and "dead" than the rest of the horse's head. I can't really put my finger on why this is; possibly they look too clean and flat. The horse itself show a lot of personality, emotion even, the hair just seems to ... perfect somehow. Not much to go on, it's just a personal opinion or maybe a feeling, I have nothing to complain about when it comes to the technique or form!
This is a beautiful piece of work, TheShock! Wonderful to see high-caliber work like this done with GIMP too. . Griatch
Hi all and thank for the comments. Griatch: a very good critique. and some good advices. i have tried to create exactly this . an Oilish aspect. I see her femenine too. and yes is sad. i response more in deep in CGtalk forum. i have work hard in the hair and i was tired of brainds. maybe on the next horse a could do better, but i want to finish this piece becouse takes me a lot of time to do it. And Yes Gimp is able to give us the right tools to paint as well like other programs do.
Marsille: Thanks for include my image in your journal. If you notice this is a CC and you can share with other people if you want. ok? Nice to see that horses like in general
